Pinteresting Finds #12: Snow Survival!

If you’re like me, you probably grew up loving the snow. School was cancelled, you could build snow forts and have snowball fights. Somehow, you could stay outside all day without ever getting cold. But, after breaking more than a few frozen water troughs and trudging through the snow with a heavy wheelbarrow to muck out stalls, the snow became more of a burden than a wondrous event. So how do you survive the long, cold winter? With a few of these great winter products!

1. Waterproof Insulated Boots – After years of wearing rain boots out in the snow and freezing no matter how many pairs of socks I add, I finally broke down and bought some insulated winter boots. These are waterproof, warm and seriously cute!

2. Hat with ponytail opening! – I’ve always had long hair and I pull it back in a ponytail when I ride. I’ve always worn hats to the barn, but had trouble finding one that fits well because I have to work around that ponytail! And something warm that fits under a helmet? Unspeakable! Until now! This hat is thin enough to wear under a helmet and you can pull your ponytail through the opening for a more comfortable experience!

3. Mountain Horse winter overpants – I HATE being cold, and these keep me warm and toasty even when the temperatures drop below freezing!

4. Toasty Soles! – I found these on www.tackoftheday.com a few years ago for $5 and decided to give them a try. They actually work! I put them in my normal riding boots so that my toes stay warm during lessons. (And then I change back into my arctic certified gear of course!)

5. Water bucket & muck bucket “cozy” – Keeping your horse’s water from freezing is probably THE most important thing to remember when the temperatures drop. These covers fit right around the traditional size “muck” buckets (which I use for water year-round) and the cover can be added for extra cold days and nights. I keep mine on all winter and it’s made a huge difference.

6. Warm Treat for your Horse! – Nothing is better than a warm latte or cup of hot chocolate after coming in from barn chores in the cold. Well, your horse has to live out there in the elements so doesn’t he deserve a warm snack too? Just add water to the mix and treat your horse to something special this winter!

This winter seems to be especially cold and long, but the days are getting just a bit longer and the weather will be warm again before we know it. Stay toasty these next few weeks and enjoy your horses!
