My Favorite Shedding Tools

How does one horse shed so much? And how do I always manage to find said hair in places it doesn’t belong: inside my shirt, my mouth, my own hair, in my paddock boots…. you get the idea! While I haven’t found a cure for any of the problems mentioned above, I have found some great products that help shed Dancer’s winter coat much faster than with just a regular curry comb or scraper. Before I get to the reviews, I’d like to mention that I don’t just use one product. I’ve found that it works best if I start with the flower curry and then work up to either the Furminator or the SleekEZ. Most days I opt for the SleekEZ because it’s bigger and it can capture a bit more hair. Then I go back over Dancer’s coat with a regular brush. I also don’t use any of these products on Dancer’s legs, face or other sensitive areas. For that, I use a Grooma like a curry comb to remove the loose hair and then go over those areas with a regular brush. Here’s a list of my favorite shedding tools in no particular order:

SleekEZ:

Pros: I bought this after reading a ton of great reviews and watching their video online. It definitely works as they say it does and I like that it’s much bigger than the Furminator. It’s basically the same concept – little teeth grab a ton of hairs. I normally start with the flower curry and then move on to this one.

Cons: Dancer has sensitive skin and the teeth can be a bit harsh if I’m not careful (the teeth are pointy). I usually angle the brush a bit to help with this.

Epona Shed Flower:

Pros: I admit I was skeptical of these at first until one of the girls at the local tack shop swore by them and convinced me to give it a try. I have been pleasantly surprised at how well this works to remove hair. I have used the Grooma Groomer curry for years, but this does work a bit better. I typically start with this because it does such a great job of removing the bulk of the loose hair and dirt.

Cons: None. This product is inexpensive and works great – and it comes in a ton of colors.

Grooma Broadstroke Brush:

Pros: This has been my “go-to” brush for sensitive areas for years and I still love it. It’s the only brush I’ve found that’s soft enough to use on Dancer’s face & legs for de-shedding and he actually seems to enjoy it. I admit I was curious and tried it on myself and it definitely works as a massage brush! haha!

Cons: It can be tough to get hair out of the rubber bristles. I’ve found that whacking the brush on the fence post works well. 😉

The Furminator:

Pros: We have one for the dog and the equine version is almost exactly the same. It works great but I’ve found that you need to use some type of curry to lift a lot of the hair out. If you just Furminate without any other brush, it won’t be as effective. I do like how much hair it pulls out though, and that it seems to do a great job

Cons: The tiny metal teeth seem to break fairly easily, which can be sharp if you’re not careful.

This combo has worked best for me the past few years. Way better than shedding blades, other curries or anything else. I hope they work for you also! Do you have any favorite shedding products?
