Mix it Up!
We’ve been having so much fun doing preschool at home this year. The curriculum we’ve been using is from Busy Toddler and it’s so perfect for Hattie. There are lessons for all five days of the week, but we are easing into it and just doing three days per week and one fun activity on Fridays (usually messy play or baking). Our goal is to do yoga on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and school on Tuesday-Thursday. This works great for active kids like Hattie because it breaks up the lesson time with exercise. The thing I love the most about this Busy Toddler curriculum is that it’s the perfect mix of activities. Some involve counting or writing or sorting and others are more creative or interactive.
For a kid who struggles with sitting and doing worksheets, this is perfect. We start with calendar time, read a book, do a lesson at the table and then we get up and do another lesson that’s more interactive. Sometimes we come back and do one more simple activity and sometimes we just stop for the day. Having a routine and an organized lesson plan has been huge for me, along with the detailed book and supply lists. I can look ahead and request books from our library and gather supplies for the next unit ahead of time. I am far from an organized person, so those lists are amazing and incredibly helpful for me.
For the past two weeks, we’ve been doing a color unit and Hattie loves it! She’s all about mixing colors, matching colors, and pretty much anything involving color. She loved the mixing activities so much, I decided to make a few printables for her to use and I’ve also linked them below.
And here are some links to our favorite color mixing activities from Busy Toddler. If you have young kids, I highly recommend following her on Instagram. She has the best ideas!
We started off mixing our colors in a calm, orderly fashion using paintbrushes like civilized people. But, we’re not exactly civilized around here! So we took things outside and got a little crazy. I’m pretty sure this was the highlight of Hattie’s week! All you need is red, blue, and yellow paint and a kiddie pool. I thought she’d finger paint for a while, but she had bigger and messier ideas and I was honestly pretty entertained. I think we’ve used this pool more for messy play than we have for swimming and I’m totally OK with that.
