Gypsy Horse Open House

Last weekend, I had the privilege of helping behind the scenes at the Gypsy Horse Open House in Bixby, OK. We’re good friends with the owners of Green Country Gypsy Horses so when they asked me to come along and help out, I jumped at the chance. I’ve been their “horse sitter” for a few years now and it’s been so great to see their herd and business grow. I love meeting the new babies in the spring and watching them grow into gentle companions. I can’t say enough great things about this family, and I’ve truly enjoyed sharing their adventures. They’ve been an integral part in bringing about more awareness to the breed and it inspired them to host this event with their trainer, Debbie Webster, at Victory Pass.

During the conference, I met other Gypsy Vanner owners from the midwest and helped them in a halter class. After all the horses paraded out into the arena for the halter class, the individual showcase events started. There were demos for western pleasure, jumping, trail and even dressage! It’s always amazing to see Simona and Argyle soaring over the jumps. You can tell how much they both love it and it’s such a joy to witness live. I was relatively uninformed about this amazing breed until the Forsyths purchased their first Gypsy horse, Arglye. Over the past few years, I’ve grown to love their gentle nature and willingness to please their riders.

Go Simona!!

As the newest addition to GCGH, Fenagh is absolutely gorgeous and one of the most laid-back horses I’ve even encountered. Simona informed me that her previous owner had some disabilities, so Fenagh was trained to open gates and climb stairs! She has the most amazing mane that has to stay braided most of the time so she doesn’t STEP ON IT. Yes, it’s been that long! Watching this horse float through the dressage demo was truly amazing! She’s trained up to third level and is training for shows this spring.

After the demos, some of the owners and trainers then opened up a question time for the spectators. They gave a brief history of the Gypsy horses and talked a bit about their calm, steady disposition. I was able to listen in on the discussion and learned a lot about the breed. I’m so glad I was able to be a part of such an informative weekend. It was refreshing to see horse owners working together to promote their breed and having so much fun in the process.
