Equestrian Blogger: Danielle Demers of Cavalcade

What do you look for in a blog? Finding a good blog is a lot like discovering a great new coffee shop. If you love it, you just have to keep coming back for more!   Cavalcade has been a frequent favorite of mine since I happened upon it through Pinterest about 6 months ago. Its owner, Danielle Demers, is a fellow equestrian and artist so I immediately felt a connection. I was drawn in in by the blog’s clean design, appealing photos and have been impressed with the variety of equestrian topics and great giveaways!

A life-long horse lover, Danielle says “I have loved drawing horses for as long as I can remember and I always enjoyed art class in school.  It wasn’t until the end of my junior year in high school though, that I actually began considering pursuing an art degree in college.  In college, I earned a B.F.A. with a concentration in painting as well as a degree in Art Education and a minor in Art History.”

When asked about her artistic influences, Danielle explained that “The artists I most often chose as influences for college painting and drawing assignments were Jim Dyne’s drawings, Piet Mondrian’s early work, Alphonse Mucha and Degas’ race horses.  Today, I am most inspired by Katie Rodgers of Paperfashion, Tony O’Connor  and Benedicte Gele just to name a few.  Graphic design wise, I have turned to the beautiful blog design inspiration blog, Pugly Pixel, countless times over the past year since starting to teach myself how to use the Adobe Creative Suite, HTML and CSS.”

When you look at the variety of work Danielle has accomplished, it’s plain to see that this girl can do it all! Not only is she a fabulous artist, she is an avid rider who began riding Western and then switched to hunt seat and later Dressage in high school. She continued to ride Dressage on her college’s riding team and has most recently adopted a Thoroughbred named Kidd. “I adopted Kidd from New Vocations after only seeing a few photos and two videos of him”, says Danielle.  “I got really lucky considering that I took such a great risk in adopting him pretty much sight unseen and had him trailered from Kentucky to Maine a few days later.  He has a great personality, loves attention and my trainer thinks that he should be able to be trained to 3rd level at least.”

When asked about future plans, Danielle says she does “plan on taking Kidd to at least one show by the end of the season.  I took his training slow during the first year that I owned him and now he is really starting to progress quickly, and it is already evident that he has the patience and athleticism to begin moving through the levels in Dressage.  If he keeps progressing as quickly as he has been for the last few months, next show season is going to be a blast!”

You might think that maintaining a blog, training a horse and finding time for a husband and two cats would completely fill up her days, but you would be wrong! This talented equestrienne launched a magazine titled Equestrian Culture early this summer, which focuses on all aspects of the Equestrian lifestyle including art, design, fashion and even some DIY projects! The magazine, according to Danielle, began after a desire to expand her blog.  ” I started brainstorming different post ideas, themes, DIY projects and regular features that I could add.  While I was planning out new post types, I thought of creating a book of DIY projects.  In the process of researching book publishing, I came across quite a few online magazines and e-books.  That is where the idea to create my own magazine originated.”

While gathering content and ideas for Equestrian Culture, Danielle states that “The regular articles in each issue of Equestrian Culture are inspired by the topics covered on Cavalcade.  Each issue features one equine artist and one photographer, a small business spotlight, ‘The Horse Behind the Brand’ (an article/interview with the founder of an equestrian business about the horses in his/her life), horses in history/art history, a book review, artwork/photography/products “From the Readers”, current trends and decor and a DIY project.  There are also special articles added to that, but those are the basics.”

One of the things I was curious about was whether or not she approached the magazine articles and blog posts the same way, or if there was an entirely different process behind each one. Danielle let me know that “Equestrian Culture‘s articles are much more detailed and fleshed out than the posts I write for Cavalcade are because Equestrian Culture is only published on a quarterly basis and new content is put up on Cavalcade at least four or five times a week.  I enjoy the contrast between the two.  After working on an article for Equestrian Culture, it is nice to put together a collage to post on Cavalcade.” She says that she enjoys the “freedom the magazine format affords in terms of design.  Post format is pretty standard across all blogs, while in magazine articles, images can spread across two pages, text can be split up into multiple columns and weave around images of various sizes, and text, illustrations, and other graphics can be added wherever the designer chooses.”
And, as if that isn’t enough, she has recently collaborated with clothing designer Tara Kiwi on the shirt design called “Gaits of the Horse”. Inspired by Muybridge’s famous photographs, the horses were first hand drawn in detail and then digitized. (CLICK HERE to read more about that process)

Whew! After all that work, I would definitely need a serious cup of coffee! It was so much fun getting to know Danielle through our blog post exchange (CLICK HERE to read her post about See Horse Design)! She is passionate about what she does and approaches each challenge with a unique creative spirit! I look forward to following more of Danielle’s equestrian adventures and artistic endeavors through her blog, Cavalcade! Check it out!
