Cool Medics

115 degrees!! I cannot believe how hot this summer has been! I have really been slacking on my riding – both lessons and schooling – because of the weather. My trainer cancels when it gets in the high 90’s (she has an indoor arena), but I don’t have the luxury of an indoor arena so the blazing hot sun makes riding – and all other outdoor activities – pretty much unbearable!

I have found one product that has helped immensely in this crazy heat – Cool Medics. I’d seen these in the tack catalogs for years, but never tried them. I wasn’t sure how they could possibly help, but at this point, I’m willing to try anything! So I went for the cooling scarf and the cooling cap. I received the product very quickly and wanted to try it immediately, so I used them today in my lesson. It was close to 100 degrees today, which was a bit unexpected because it was only supposed to be in the mid 90’s. I guess it was the perfect day to try them out! I soaked them in water for a few seconds before I left and headed out the door.

I wore the cooling scarf the entire time and only had to re-soak once. It does help if you turn the scarf over after a while – it will last a lot longer. The cooling cap was my favorite. I was surprised when I put it under my baseball cap and it actually felt cold! It stayed pretty cold for an hour and then slowly cooled down. I normally work in the barn tacking/untacking horses, bathing them and turning them out for a few hours before my lesson. I wear shorts at first, then go change into breeches, boots & my helmet. That is a good time for me to go re-soak everything so that I will stay cool during my lesson! I admit I was skeptical, but I am now going to recommend this product to all my horsey friends! I’m also thinking of buying a vest for next summer!
