Book Review – Riding Lessons
I recently picked up a book called ‘Riding Lessons’ by Sara Gruen. I’d read a few reviews on it, but had mixed feelings about starting a “horse” novel for adults. I was afraid it would be boring or poorly written or that the horse-related information would be completely wrong. But, when I saw this book sitting on the shelf for 60% off at our Border’s store closing, I decided it was worth a try.
The book started off a little cliche but after a few chapters became much more interesting and enjoyable. The writing is not amazing, but it’s also not terrible. It’s clear and descriptive, which I appreciate because I always visualize everything I read. (That’s the artist in me I guess) The characters took a little while to develop, but ended up being somewhat interesting and relatable. The main character, Annemarie, is going through some tough family issues and moves back home to help take care of her parent’s riding academy. She quickly learns that she’s in way over her head and things start to get interesting. Throw a rebellious daughter, an old flame and dying father into the mix and it quickly starts to resemble an episode of Dr. Phil! Despite all of its drama and the occasional “cheesy” moment or two, the book will make an excellent summer read. If you’re looking for something entertaining that involves horses, this is the book for you!
The sequel, ‘Flying Change’, is a continuation of the story. I’ve heard this book focuses a bit more on Annemarie’s daughter and the horse that she has adopted and begun to train. I have not read it, but will probably pick it up this summer so look for a review coming soon!
